Worum geht es beim neuen Album?
Das neue Album reiht sich nahtlos in die Diskografie von DARKNESS ein: Nach „Death Squad“, „Defenders Of Justice“ und „The Gasoline Solution“, ist „First Class Violence“ der nächste Schritt und ein weiteres fehlendes Puzzleteil, um die Welt durch die wütenden und verzweifelten Augen von DARKNESS zu sehen.
Warum der Titel „First Class Violence“?
Als DARKNESS vor vielen Jahren angefangen haben Thrash zu spielen, war das zu einer Zeit in der man sich, wenn man Gewalt beging, oftmals noch die Hände schmutzig machen musste.
Heute ist das viel einfacher. Gewalt ohne direkte Berührung mit dem Opfer. Wenn jemand eine Meinung nicht teilt, schickt man einfach eine Drohne vorbei und geht danach nett Abendessen.
Gewalt ganz ohne die lästigen Nebeneffekte. „Erstklassige Gewalt“ halt!
Das Teil wurde bei Rambado Recordings aufgenommen. Warum?
Wir waren uns sehr schnell beim Songwriting darüber einig, dass wir diesmal einiges in die Produktion stecken wollten. Nachdem Massacre Records als Label an Bord war, machten wir uns auf die Suche nach einem passenden Studio. Fündig geworden sind wir direkt vor unserer Haustür. Corny hat sein Studio in Essen und schon so Knaller wie die aktuelle Scheibe von Disbelief, Onkel Tom oder Sodom aufgenommen.
Was könnt Ihr über das Cover sagen?
Das Cover folgt einer Story: Wenn man die Cover von „Death Squad“, „Defenders Of Justice“, „The Gasoline Solution“ und „First Class Violence“ hintereinander legt, versteht man es recht schnell.
Ihr habt äußerst bekannte Gastsänger aus der Metalszene dabeigehabt. Was hat es damit
auf sich?
Olli, unser verstorbener Sänger, ist dieses Jahr genau 20 Jahre tot. Wir haben einen Song, der an ihn erinnern soll, auf der Scheibe. Mr. Angelripper und Ventor haben es sich nicht nehmen lassen, ein paar Textzeilen für ihren verstorbenen Weggefährten und Kumpel rauszuhauen.

What is the album about?
The album blends perfectly into the existing discography of the band. Following „Death Squad“, „Defenders Of Justice“ and „The Gasoline Solution“, „First Class Violence“ is the next step and another missing piece in the puzzle that helps you to see the world through the angry and desperate eyes of DARKNESS.
Why the album title „First Class Violence“?
Well, back in the days, when DARKNESS started playing thrash, you often had to dirty your hands if you wanted to commit violence. Nowadays, it’s a lot easier: Violence without direct contact with the victim. When someone does not share your opinion, you send them a drone and go fine dining afterwards. Violence without any side-effects. „First Class Violence“, if you will!
The album was recorded at Rambado Recordings. Why?
While writing the songs, we all agreed that we want to invest in the production. After we signed with Massacre Records, we started searching for the perfect studio. We found one nearby, since Corny’s studio is also in Essen, where the latest records of Disbelief, Onkel Tom or Sodom have also been recorded.
What can you tell us about the cover artwork?
The cover follows a storyline. If you arrange the artwork from „Death Squad“, „Defenders Of Justice“, „The Gasoline Solution“ and „First Class Violence“ in chronological order, you’ll understand what it is about.
You recruited well-known guest vocalists. What is this all about?
This year marks the 20th anniversary of the death of our late vocalist Olli. The album includes a memorial song in his honor. Mr. Angelripper and Ventor insisted on contributing something to honor their late companion and friend.

BAND BIOGRAPHY
Das Thrash-Metal-Commando DARKNESS stammt aus Essen (Altenessen), neben der Bay Area die kreativste Keimzelle der Thrash Welle in den 1980er Jahren. 1984 gegründet macht sich die Formation mit den Demos „Evil Curse“, „Titanic War“ und „Spawn Of The Dark One“ einen Namen. In den Jahren 1987-1989 veröffentlicht DARKNESS drei Alben.
Das erste Album „Death Squad“ gilt als Thrash-Klassiker und hat den Kultstatus von DARKNESS begründet, der bis heute Bestand hat und Thrash Musiker in der ganzen Welt beeinflusst.
Im Jahr 1991 wird es ruhiger um die Band, 1998 stirbt tragischerweise Sänger Olli.
Wie bei vielen Metal-Veteranen, dreht sich auch bei DARKNESS das Besetzungskarussell: Lacky und Arnd, die Konstanten der Band, machen sich auf die Suche nach einer stabilen Besetzung für ein Comeback. Den Gitarristen Meik finden Sie bereits 2013. Lee bekommt von Arnd Ende 2014 das Mikrofon übergeben, der sich fortan ausschließlich auf die Gitarre und Backgrounds konzentriert. 2015 übernimmt Dirk den Bass von Christian „Spessy“ Giesler, der durch seinen Hauptberuf bei Kreator keine Zeit mehr hat, bei DARKNESS mitzumischen.
Nach dem Keep It True Festival, aber insbesondere seit 2014, spielten DARKNESS auf namenhaften Festivals wie dem Turock Open Air, Storm Crusher Festival oder dem Ruhrpott Metal Meeting. Auch bei zahlreichen Clubshows wird europaweit die Oldschool Keule geschwungen und bewiesen, wofür die Band steht: Thrash der alten Schule – brachial, schnell, kompromisslos und gemein!
Mit dem Album „The Gasoline Solution“ ist seit 2016 ein echter Nachfolger der beiden Klassiker „Death Squad“ und „Defenders Of Justice“ auf dem Markt. Nun, in 2018, meldet sich DARKNESS lautstark mit dem neuen Album „First Class Violence“ zurück.
BAND BIOGRAPHY
The thrash metal commando DARKNESS is hailing from Essen (Altenessen), Germany, which was one of the most creative hot-spots of thrash, besides the Bay Area, in the 1980’s.
Formed in 1984, the band made a name for itself with the demo releases „Evil Curse“, „Titanic War“ and „Spawn Of The Dark One“. From 1987 until 1989, DARKNESS released 3 studio albums. The debut, „Death Squad“, is considered as a thrash classic and helped the band gaining a cult status in the thrash scene. It got a bit silent around the band in 1991. Seven years later, vocalist Olli tragically passed away.
Just like other veteran metal bands, DARKNESS underwent some line-up changes: Long-time band members Lacky and Arnd started looking for a stable line-up to start a comeback. They recruited guitarist Meik in 2013. Arnd passed the microphone on to Lee in late 2014, since he wanted to focus on playing guitars and background stuff. In 2015, Dirk stepped in for Christian „Spessy“ Giesler on bass, because the latter was no longer able to fully commit to DARKNESS due to his main job at Kreator.
Following the Keep It True Festival, and especially since 2014, DARKNESS played at well-known festivals like Turock Open Air, Storm Crusher Festival or Ruhrpott Metal Meeting. They also played numerous club shows and proved what DARKNESS stands for: Old-school thrash – brutal, fast, uncompromising and mean!
„The Gasoline Solution“, released in 2016, is a worthy successor to the classics „Death Squad“ and „Defenders Of Justice“. Now, in 2018, DARKNESS is back with a bang and the new album „First Class Violence“.
